Lazy Catcus B&B owner Mike Merritt says running a bed and breakfast in Abliene, TX is a dream turned reality.
Southwestern Comforts with Texas Hospitality
ABILENE, Texas — Kick off your boots at the Lazy Cactus Bed & Breakfast and take in the comforts of the laidback Southwest.
The interior relaxes you with colors of the American desert: chili pepper red, soothing sand colors, mahogany browns and cactus green accents. The stylish décor also incorporates themes such as Native American Indian rugs and Saguaro "pitchfork" cactuses — iconic themes of the rugged American southwest.
And just like a home on the range, it's Sunday-morning quiet here; not like a lot of B & Bs with guests blithely stampeding through at all hours. At the Lazy Cactus, you'll hear the birds, wind chimes and wind rustling the trees. The noise never gets above the sound of your own voice.
Inn in Abilene Owners Mike and Janice Merritt said the Lazy Cactus fulfills a longtime dream of owning a bed and breakfast that incorporates the southwestern Santa Fe style they love.
"Abilene is a western town, but we noticed there weren't any western style B & Bs," he said.
Lazy Cactus is a three-room guesthouse (behind the owner's house) with bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom and completely private. The entertainment center has flat screen TV along with dozens of VHS/DVDs and a stereo/CD player.
There's also a healthy selection of fiction and nonfiction books and magazines — ideal page-turner material for weekend lounging on the front porch.
Cactus-style breakfast Breakfast includes Belgian waffles with thick cuts of mesquite smoked bacon. If staying two nights, guests receive the signature cactus quiche topped with...you guessed it. Fresh slices of delicious cactus, which tastes like a cross between bell pepper and okra.
Located in a residential neighborhood, Lazy Cactus is just minutes from historic downtown Abilene, and near attractions such as Frontier Texas!, the Grace Museum, the Center for Children's Illustrated Literature and the Paramount Theater.
Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home. Check out the reflecting spheres and art glass, which accent the garden areas. Adjacent to the guesthouse is the bird sanctuary, featuring many interesting bird feeders crafted from colored bottles and art glass.
